What was Queer As Folk about?
Queer As Folk was a show set in Pittsburgh about a group of four gay friends and those around them. It followed them as they made their way through their everyday lives of work and play. The play of which included nightly stops at their favorite dance club "Babylon". It dealt with the many issues gay people have to face and showed how the characters dealt with it. There were five seasons throughout which the characters grew and changed.
What was the best part about the show?
The best part about the show was that the characters acted and grew realistically throughout the series. Michael, for example, started as a closeted worker at the Big Q with no goals or ambitions. By the end of the show, he was married to Ben, had a foster son, a biological daughter, owned his own comic book store, and was much more assertive and proud in his life. All of the other characters grew in their own ways and they remained friends even though they were at different points in their lives. Most of the characters in the show were likeable and cast well. The characters sometimes made bad decisions, but the show didn't seem to want you to judge them a certain way, they were just being human and it made the show very realistic.
What was the worst part about the show?
The focus that was put on Brian and Justin's relationship was the worst part about the show. Really just the character of Justin was the worst part, in our opinion. We did not like how many of the other characters adored him from the start and told Brian that Justin was his responsibility. Theirs was not a healthy relationship and we are glad that the show ended with them apart.
Where did the show go wrong?
The show went wrong where Justin and Ethan's relationship was concerned. Ethan made Justin interesting and their relationship seemed to be going well. It was out of character for Ethan to suddenly cheat on Justin because he was away from him for one night, and it seemed like it was just a plot contrivance to get Brian and Justin back together again. That was in the middle of the third season, so it didn't ruin the show, but it was an annoying plot.
What is our favorite/most memorable scene?
The road trip to New York, the bike ride, Ben and Michael getting married, when Michael sang "Ben", when Drew admitted to Emmett that he was gay and came out on the news show, when Brian finally went to the comic convention with Michael, when Brian was coaching Gus on being the ring bearer for his wedding, when Michael was upset that Captain Astro died, Debbie's "Christmas" party for Vic, when Brian needed Michael after his dad died (the bowling down the street scene), when Brian came to comfort Michael when Ben was in the hospital, Michael joining the pride parade with Debbie, when Blake and Ted met up again at the ski lodge, when Emmett moved in with Debbie, and the last scene of the series.
Who are our favorite characters and why?
Michael, Emmett, Brian, Ben, and Hunter. We believe that Michael was the main character of the show and we enjoyed all of his storylines throughout the series. He was a good character who was friends with everyone and kept the whole group together. Emmett grew the most out of all the characters over the course of the show, and even though he provided a lot of the comic relief, he was a very deep character. Brian was the face of the show and he was a very complex and conflicted character. We loved his relationship with Michael and how they stuck together through everything. Ben was a welcome addition to the show and a great partner for Michael. Hunter was also a great addition to the cast who provided a different dynamic and was very entertaining.
