Characters (page 2)
Rocky DeSantos, played by Steve Cardenas, arrived in the middle of season 2 and took the role of red ranger due to Jason's departure from the team. He was a very charismatic and fun guy who loved to help other people. Rocky was very involved with karate and was best friends with Adam and Aisha. The three of them first met the rangers when they came to compete in a ninja competition, which they actually won. Rocky remained on the show to the very beginning of Turbo, where he injured his back in an accident during a practice with Adam and Tommy. Due to his injury, Justin replaced him as the blue ranger, and he decided to continue with the rangers even after he was healed. Rocky decided that he would rather concentrate on his karate school and left the ranger business to Justin. Rocky never really had much of a starring role in the show, but he seemed like he was a very interesting character, and the change from Rocky to Justin was a very poor one for the show. |
Adam Park, played by one of our favorite actors, Johnny Yong Bosch, was the black ranger. He came onto the show after three of the original rangers (Jason, Zack, and Trini) left to go to the peace conference. Adam replaced Zack, and they were as different as night and day. Adam was very quiet and sensitive while Zack was loud and fun loving. Adam was a very skilled martial artist, whereas Zack's style of fighting was a mix of martial arts and freestyle dancing. When we were younger, we didn't see too many episodes with Adam, but we are now huge fans of Johnny (we have a section about him in "Our Favorites") and he does a great job playing Adam. One cute scene of Adam was when they had an assignment to do for school about which time period they would have wanted to live in. Adam picked the Renaissance because it seemed romantic. Although his friends gently teased him for his choice, it was a good example of Adam's sweet, romantic personality. |
Aisha Campbell was played by Karan Ashley, and she replaced Trini as the yellow ranger. Aisha was also very different from Trini, as Trini was very mature and focused whereas Aisha was more free spirited and into having fun. They were both an asset to the team in their own ways though. We really liked the original Mighty Morphin team, but we found ourselves enjoying the ones with Adam, Rocky, and Aisha more though. The show seemed to use less recycled footage and seemed less awkward and more put together. Plus Aisha, Rocky, and Adam just appealed to us more than the first three, although we really did like all of them. Karan Ashley starred in the movie "Devon's Ghost" with Johnny Yong Bosch (Adam), and it was fun to seem them in the behind-the-scenes talking about their ranger days. |
Catherine Sutherland played Katherine Hillard, who replaced Kimberly as the pink ranger. The switch between Kim and Kat was a turning point in the show, and unfortunately was not for the best. Kat was a pretty dull character and as the show went on, she seemed to be able to do nothing but get herself into trouble and constantly yell for Tommy to help her. Kat came onto the show as a pawn of Rita's, but eventually broke hold of the spell and befriended the rangers for real. She told Kimberly once of her past in the Pan Global Games as a diver, where she hit her head on the board during a competition. To prove to Kim that she had to get back out there and keep trying, she dove again, the first time since the competition and conquered her fear of the water. Kat stayed on the show through Turbo, and was not one of our favorite characters at all. |
Bulk and Skull, the comic relief duo, were played by Paul Schrier and Jason Narvy. They remained on the show longer than any of the rangers and although their shtick grew tiring, they were usually pretty entertaining. We liked when the episodes went a little deeper into their characters, such as when Adam convinced Skull not to be ashamed of his piano playing talents. Bulk and Skull started out as irresponsible goofs who always got in trouble at school, but really changed a lot throughout the show. Although they never lost their incompetent side, they matured a lot when they became Junior Police Officers. They took their jobs very seriously and were not completely awful at it either. Bulk and Skull proved their bravery and selflessness on more than on occasion, and they were two very good characters. Both of the actors even appeared in the movie "Extreme Heist" with Johnny Yong Bosch, and it was so cool to see Jason Narvy in a role so different from Skull. Bulk had a small cameo in it, and it was a pretty good movie! |
