Characters
Sir Thomas Grey, played by Nigel Terry, was the lord of Covington Cross. He and his wife, Anne, had five children together: Armus, Richard, William, Eleanor, and Cedric. Sadly, Anne passed away when Cedric was just a baby, and Thomas struggled to raise his family on his own, although he was constantly finding them in some kind of trouble. He was a true nobleman, and was close friends with King Edward and other high ranking noblemen in England. Sir Thomas' biggest problems always occurred around Baron John Mullens, who was dead set on seeing that Thomas and his family were out of his way. Sir Thomas was usually a very fair and loving father, but he sometimes got caught between what he thought was right for his family and what they really wanted. |
Tim Killick played the eldest brother, Armus Grey. He was the first son to be sent to fight in the Crusades, and he went to uphold his rightful place in the family. It was his duty to fight for his country and make his family proud. During one battle, he made his first kill in self-defense, and he never truly forgave himself for what he had done. He gave up fighting from that moment on and became a cook for the other knights, although he couldn't bring himself to tell his family. When Armus returned home, the truth came out, but his family turned out to be much more understanding then he expected. Armus once confided in Richard that he wished more than anything to be the second son, because he felt he had to carry the weight of all the expectations of the family. Armus told Richard that while he could pursue whatever was in his heart, Armus felt he had to pursue what was in his father's. |
Richard Grey was Sir Thomas and Anne's second son, played by Jonathan Firth. Richard was an opinionated, stubborn young man, quite the opposite of his older brother Armus. He always wished he could have been born the first son, to be the one that his father was proud of. Richard put his pride and his family above all else, and always followed his heart. His mother's death had a deep and lasting impact on him, and one scene even showed him completely breaking down at his mother's grave. Richard could be very arrogant and almost snobbish, but he was a good person and could admit to others when he was wrong. He seemed to not joke around as much as his siblings, but they always knew they could rely on him when it was needed. |
Eleanor Grey was played by Ione Skye. She was Thomas' headstrong daughter, who would rather be out riding horses and shooting the crossbow then acting like a lady. She struggled with what was socially acceptable for women, because she would rather be herself than what her father wanted her to be. In the last episode, "Brothers", Eleanor gave up her tomboyish ways and asked Lady Elizabeth to help her become a lady. She was tired of having men ignore her and wanted to finally try to be what her father expected of her. Although Eleanor did not always show it, it seemed that she secretly respected and admired Lady Elizabeth very much. Lady Elizabeth was happy to teach Eleanor how to be a true lady, and not only did it help Eleanor be noticed by the men in the town and her father, but it also brought the two women closer together. Eleanor struggled with her new lifestyle, but still managed to keep her true personality. |
Glenn Quinn played the good-looking, charismatic Cedric, the youngest of the Grey family. It was Cedric's mother's dying wish to have her youngest son join the clergy, to spare him the horrors of war. Cedric had other plans for his life, however, and grew up wanting to be a knight like his older brothers. He didn't have the patience or the desire to learn the ways of the clergy, and instead preferred chasing after women and training with his sword. Cedric was quite a ladies man - he once seduced a young nun into falling in love with him, and even courted Alexandra, Baron Mullens' daughter. Cedric could be very impulsive and did not always go along with his father's wishes, but he always tried to do what he thought was right. |
Paul Brooke played the Friar of Covington Cross. He was an important part of life in the castle, although he may not have always felt that way. When Cedric was training to be a cleric, the Friar spent much time trying to impart his wisdom to him. Once Cedric convinced his father that joining the clergy was a bad idea for him, the Friar didn't really feel he had a purpose in the castle anymore. He was always there when someone needed him, though, and he could always be counted on. When Sir Thomas asked the Friar to write a book about what went on in everyday life at Covington Cross, he wrote it quickly and didn't leave out a single detail, although Thomas later burned the book because of its embarrassing nature. The Friar once stood up for a woman who was accused of witchcraft against the Abbot of the church. Although it could have cost him is profession and place in the church, the Friar had to stand up for what he believed in, even if it was not what was expected of him. |
Cherie Lunghi played Lady Elizabeth, Sir Thomas' girlfriend. She got along well with most of the people in the castle, although it took Eleanor awhile to warm up to her. Lady Elizabeth started out as Eleanor's music instructor, but gave up when she realized that she was just wasting her time. Lady Elizabeth had two children of her own, Adam and Lenore, who lived in France and managed her properties there. She was very much in love with Sir Thomas and he relied on her strength and love to help him through many rough times. Lady Elizabeth was always available to offer advice when it was needed, and probably saved Sir Thomas' relationship with several of his children on many different occasions. |
James Faulkner played Baron John Mullens, a rich nobleman who made it his duty to ruin those of Covington Cross. The issues between the Greys and the Mullens seemed to go back some ways, but that had to at least put on some show of getting along since they were both close to the king. Mullens was not a respectable man, and caused many problems for the Grey family. He once even got them evicted from their property when he had the deed to their castle changed, but with his daughter Alexandra helping them out, things turned out all right again in the end. Cedric was really playing with fire by having a relationship with Alexandra, but Mullens was a very smart and manipulative man, and Alexandra never truly believed her father was evil. Sir Thomas and his family usually came out okay in the end, but it certainly wasn't for Mullens' lack of trying. |
