Anastasia was a child when the government led by her father was overthrown. Her grandmother escaped to Paris, and Anastasia received a nasty bump on the head, giving her amnesia. She ended up in an orphanage. Meanwhile, her immediate family-siblings and parents-were all mercilessly slaughtered. Upon reaching adulthood (or near adulthood), Anya, as she was now called, decided to forget taking a simple job and instead wandered off to find her past.
Dimitri, as a child, had worked at the palace as a servant. He helped Anastasia and her grandmother to an escape passage when the palace was being overrun. As a young adult, he and his partner, Vladimir, scheme to find a girl to pose as Anastasia, so they can win the reward money her grandmother is offering. When Dimitri meets Anya, he knows she is perfect for the role, but what he doesn't know and she doesn't remember is that she really is the Princess Anastasia!
Dimitri, Anya, and Vladimir face many dangers on their journey to Paris, and despite their bickering and each trying to be boss, Dimitri and Anya grow to care about each other. An impromptu waltz seals their fate. As the villainous Rasputin closes in, and as Anastasia prepares to take back her role in high society, Dimitri realizes having Anya is a greater reward, and she realizes having love is more important than reclaiming her prestige and fame.

This quote is the in the song, "Paris Holds the Key (To Your Heart)". Anya was dancing and Dimitri was watching her and sung the following words, showing his love for her.
Dimitri:
"Paris holds the key to her past.
Yes, princess, I've found you at last.
No more pretend
You'll be gone
That's the end..."

Although Anastasia will be sure to frequently visit her grandmother, she will retire from her position of royalty, and instead, she and Dimitri will settle down for a simple life of romance and freedom in Paris.
