Mick Leary was a homicide detective for the Vancouver police department. When the show started, he had just been promoted to this position. Apparently, he got the job over a lot of other people with seniority because of a computer program that he had made. He had an extreme passion for his work, never wanting to close a case until he was satisfied with the results. He was married to a woman named Kim before the show started, but it didn't work out. He was in the process of getting a divorce well into the show and it was never really stated if he actually did.
Sunny Ramen was a pathologist with the Vancouver coroner's office. She was very serious about her work, but she liked to joke around whenever she got the chance. Sunny and Mick first met when he became a homicide detective. They seemed to click right away and became fast friends. It wasn't long before Mick asked her out and their relationship took off. He would always find the time to visit her during the day, if only for a short amount of time, and both wished that their schedules weren't so busy so they could spend more time together.
During a case in the beginning of the fourth season, Mick met a police officer named Josie who had a major crush on him. He really did nothing to fend her off - he probably did just the opposite by becoming friends with her. Because they were friends, Mick didn't realize that it was Josie that killed the two victims in the case he was working on. He also didn't follow correct procedures when he and Leo went to arrest her. She bolted when they asked to search her apartment and seize her gun, and she ended up shooting and killing herself.
It was that case that began Mick's downfall. He became distant with Sunny and wouldn't let her in anymore. He kept all of his emotions bottled up inside and let his relationship with Sunny fall apart. They couldn't really communicate anymore because of his personal problems, and neither one knew how to fix things between them. After their break-up, Mick got evicted from his apartment, slept in his truck on the beach for about two seasons, and had major issues to work out inside of his head. I wonder if all of that would have happened if he had just tried a little harder to stay with Sunny?

This scene takes place in the first season episode "The Stranger Inside". Mick would always pulled Sunny aside to hit on her or ask her out, and he decided to take a more serious approach this time.
Mick: "Hey Sunny."
Sunny: "Hey!"
Mick: "How you doing?"
Sunny: "Good...busy. You?"
Mick: "Yeah, yeah me too...always. (pause) Um, I meant to ask you something...want to go out for a drink sometime?"
Sunny (smiling): "Sure, yeah I'd like that."
Mick: "All right, I'll give you a call. We could play it by ear, whatever."
Sunny: "Sure, sounds good."
Mick: "Great, see you."

This scene takes place in the first season episode "The Stranger Inside". Mick and Sunny had drinks at his apartment for their first date and it's getting late.
Sunny: "Mick? I should go, it's getting late."
Mick: "Yeah (she puts on her coat) here, I'll help you with that."
Sunny: "Thanks."
(they kiss)
Sunny: "That was very nice."
Mick: "You wanna stay?"
Sunny: "I'd like to, but I think we should probably take it a little slow."
Mick: "Yeah, that's good. I'm a patient man, I can wait."
